Priorities
Issues to engage immediately
The following are the priority issues throughout the region which need to receive the attention of IFAISA:
- Securing the freedom of the media - a vigilant and free press is the first line of defence of accountability.
- Protecting the independence of judicial officers and the judicature - to enforce accountability through institutional checks and balances; the Courts are the ultimate formal institution for exacting accountability.
- Encouraging the promotion of the right to basic education - ignorant and free never can be.
- Addressing issues of poverty, unemployment and ignorance constructively - the direct route to prosperity, peace and progress.
- Eliminating the abuse of power through corruption, cronyism and criminality - a cancer in the body politic.
- Ensuring free and fair elections - no intimidation, no jerry-mandering.
- Promoting constitutionalism and respect for the rule of law as the best chance of a peaceful, progressive and prosperous future in the region - making ideals real.
